Bold, diamond-encrusted bands will be one of the most popular and defining styles for engagement rings in 2021.

The year 2021 brings a new wave of exciting and unexpected engagement ring trends. From blue gemstones to thick statement bands, the new year’s engagement ring trends cater to almost every taste and style. Check out these fun designs to help inspire your own custom engagement ring now!

1. Add an Extra Diamond — or Two

diamond engagement ring

Who said you could only add one diamond to your engagement ring? Traditionally, engagement rings featured a single, shining diamond placed right at its center. Its simple and classic design was practically a universal sign of engagement. But this year, we’re taking it a step further by adding an extra diamond. Or, in some cases, two diamonds.

When it comes to choosing the shape and size of the rings, you have quite a bit of room for flexibility. You can pair different shapes together, such as a pear cut with an emerald cut. Some people prefer choosing diamonds that differ in size. The smaller diamond, or diamonds, can help accentuate the larger one. In general, two-diamond rings are a bit bolder and edgier than three-diamond rings featuring a large centerpiece gem.

2. Something Blue

This delicate ring adds something blue to your upcoming wedding.

“Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.” For good luck, a bride needs to carry all four objects with her on her wedding day. A blue gemstone not only fulfills one-fourth of this old rhyme, but it also adds a fun and unique twist to the engagement ring. Because of the wide range of shades possible, it’s easy to design a blue engagement ring that stands out from the rest. From deep, royal blue shades to light cerulean colors, blue gemstones can seamlessly transform a regular engagement ring into something dazzling and refreshing.

3. Alexandrite Over Diamond

Alexandrite is a durable stone known for its color-changing abilities. “Emerald by day, ruby by night,” is a popular saying attributed to alexandrite gemstones. In terms of price and durability, they are about even with diamonds. What really makes them stand out is their tendency to change colors depending on the angle and light they are viewed under. Alexandrite’s colors range from orange to blue to green. If you and your bride want something a little alternative or edgy, you’ll love this delightful gem.

4. Sustainability

Practicing sustainability in the fashion and jewelry industry has been gaining traction over the last several years. In 2021, you can expect it to be more popular than ever.

In an effort to protect the planet and its inhabitants, couples are looking for sustainable engagement rings. This includes rings that use ethically-sourced diamonds or ones made from recycled metals. Some people have even opted for lab-grown diamonds. Not only are lab-grown diamonds guaranteed to be conflict-free, but they are also typically cheaper than mined diamonds.

5. Going Vintage

While we may be moving forward a year in time, many couples are turning back to vintage engagement ring styles for inspiration. The timeless look of a simple, round diamond with a delicate band has started to rise in popularity again. Emerald and Asscher cuts are also great choices if you’re trying to go for a vintage look.

6. Statement Bands

While classic engagement rings are coming back in style, that doesn’t mean that head-turning statement bands are falling behind. You can expect to see plenty of bold ring bands in 2021. That said, if you still want to design a delicate and understated engagement ring, you can save the thick band for your wedding rings.

7. Or Something Green

If blue isn’t your partner’s color, consider adding an emerald gem instead. Emerald is associated with Venus, the goddess of love. It also looks gorgeous with any outfit. Because of its wide range of shades, you can easily find an emerald that matches your bride’s skin tone.
